Manuscripts, Motets and Modes: The Thirteenth Century in Western Music
THL Elsa von Heilbronn
This class is a basic overview of major developments in Western European music from 1200-1300, with plenty of listening examples. We’ll look at music from the great manuscript collections, such as Carmina Burana and the Cantigas de Santa Maria, as well as the dawn of music with multiple parts, including the French motet, and. just briefly, trends in music notation and theory.
