Using the International Phonetic Alphabet

Baroness Kasha Alekseeva

The International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is a tool used by linguists and singers to communicate the pronunciation of words with precision. IPA makes it easier to quickly learn the correct pronunciation of texts in modern and historical languages, and to teach that pronunciation to others with minimal ambiguity. This class will introduce you to the IPA’s list of symbols and teach you how to figure out what each one means. We will also practice writing the symbols, reading them aloud, and using them to identify whether what we hear is the same as what we see written.
